Have You Joined Your State Association of Nonprofits?
State Associations serve as the policy voice for nonprofits in their statehouses – Nonprofits are under tremendous pressure as state budget deficits squeeze local governments into paying nonprofits late, or not 100% full cost. State and local governments from Cambridge, MA, to Hawai’i are looking at ways to impose taxes, fees and PILOTS (payments in lieu of taxes) on nonprofits. (Read more from our 2010 Special Report about the broken government contracting system).

By joining their State Associations, nonprofits can stay connected with the policy issues that affect their work in their communities, and also join their voices with other nonprofits to make a difference in local and statewide decision-making.  There are so many reasons to be a networked nonprofit! Solid information about policy issues among them.  Nonprofits can stay connected to the advocacy and capacity building information distributed by the National Council of Nonprofits (free newsletters) and through joining their State Association of Nonprofits.
